Ese podría ser el relato de cualquier de las noches que Nick Pilfold y su equipo pasaron en los parajes africanos buscando al famoso leopardo negro africano, un ejemplar que no había sido fotografiado en los últimos cien años y que muchos catalogaban de irreal. Ahora, por fin, el sueño se ha convertido en realidad.
Ahora, Pilfold y el equipo del zoo de San Diego lo han logrado. Sus cámaras han capturado a un precioso ejemplar de hembra con su peculiar color negro, producto del melanismo, una condición que sólo tiene el 10 por ciento de los leopardos y que provoca un exceso de pigmento que vuelve su piel negra.
Despertar de un sueño
Will Burrard-Lucas ha sido el fotógrafo que ha conseguido las imágenes. En su blog asegura que para él “ningún animal está envuelto en más misterio, ningún animal es más esquivo y ningún animal es más bello. Durante muchos años fueron un sueño y el centro de historias descabelladas contadas alrededor de una hoguera. Nadie a quien conociera había visto uno en plena naturaleza y nunca pensé que yo pudiera hacerlo".
Burrard-Lucas utilizó las cámaras Camtraptions especializadas en fotografía de vida salvaje. Se colocaron cerca de senderos por donde transitan los animales, así como en las inmediaciones de manantiales y otros recursos de agua. Estuvieron colocadas las 24 horas del día, pero sólo se encendían de noche para intentar captar al leopardo.
Nick Pilfold confirma a la CNN que las imágenes son el producto de muchos meses de observación y espera. Su equipo llevaba desde 2018 en este área de Kenia buscando un leopardo negro, después de escuchar testimonios que lo ubicaban en la zona. Finalmente, han conseguido su objetivo.
